Getting to know Mrs. Van Echten

Dear AVCS Parents and Students,

Welcome back to school! I am really looking forward to another school year with my new class of fifth graders.

My name is Lea Van Echten. I am one of the 5th grade teachers at this wonderful school.
This is my twelfth year of teaching. I have taught in a private all girls school in Long Beach for five years. I have also taught in the Santa Ana Unified School District for five years. This is my second year teaching at AVCS.

I have been married to my best friend, Harry, for twelve years. We have been together for eighteen years. We met in college. We have two beautiful boys. Harrison is nine and a half and Hayden is seven years old. I am so excited that both of my boys will be attending AVCS this year. It is a teacher’s dream!

I love to travel and experience new adventures.  I enjoy online scrapbooking, going to the movies and spending time with friends and family. I enjoy my children. I love to watch them play and listen to them speak. They ask the most interesting questions.

Last year was so amazing! God made fifth grade so wonderful. He filled it with wonderful memories, many educational experiences and unforgettable teachable moments and conversations. He blessed me with an outstanding teaching partner, Mrs. Cornish. Our professional relationship is a perfect combination for fifth grade. I am proud to say that she is a dear friend of mine now.  We welcome our newest teaching partner to fifth grade, Miss Lostrom. We welcome her with open arms and are looking forward to working with her.

My goals for my fifth graders are to help them to continue to practice taking responsibility for themselves, their actions and their materials (assignments, homework, etc.) and to stay organized. Our monthly organizers will help us tremendously.

We are going to be thoroughly prepared for sixth grade!
