English as Second Language (ESL) AT AVCS
This class is designed to mentally and emotionally stimulate English as Second Language (ESL) students through the use of English Language. By encouraging students to read a variety of materials and having them to write responses and, through class discussions; he or she will academically learn and improve the essential skills needed to advance and progress in the subjects of reading comprehension, writing, and communication in English.
This year-round course is a contribution to analyzing literary content, participating in class discussions, comprehending written materials, usage of appropriate grammar, and vocabulary learning. The students are assigned one textbook, workbook and various class assignments to complete the course throughout the year. After each year, students shall be evaluated to move on to the next level. It is mandatory for ESL training required students during their regular English and History class.
LEVELS
ESL Basic Level The ESL Basic Level Conversation and Vocabulary enrichment course is an introductory that develops basic vocabulary and language skills necessary for students’ everyday communication. The class focuses on group participation to develop pronunciation of Basic English vocabulary for non-native speakers.
ESL Level II ESL Level II is a preliminary level designed to develop reading and writing skills. A methodical presentation of fundamentals of English grammar and sentence structure are incorporated with group activities and class participation to develop and enhance new skills.
ESL Level III ESL Level III emphasizes the development of conversational and reading skills. The course is consists of stressing vocabulary and text content analysis in academic, revealing, and fictional texts.
Grammar and Writing
This part of the program provides learners with coping skills and cultural information necessary for written communication. It offers learners the opportunity to develop, practice, and to apply the basic structures of English and to perform simple writing tasks. Students who enroll in this course should have basic literacy skills in their native language. Listening and Speaking
This part of the program introduces the key vocabulary and structures necessary for spoken communication and exposes students to American customs and values. It offers learners the opportunity to develop, practice, and apply basic English language skills.
Reading and Vocabulary Development
This part of the program develops nonnative English students' reading and vocabulary skills for personal and academic communication by using authentic materials based on a number of universal topics. Focus is on word analysis, vocabulary, literal comprehension, and speed. Writing is required to complement extensive and varied reading activities.
