Getting to know Mrs. Van Echten

Dear AVCS Parents and Students,

Welcome back to school! I am really looking forward to another school year with my new class of fifth graders.

My name is Lea Van Echten. I am one of the 5th grade teachers at this wonderful school.
This is my thirteenth year of teaching. I have taught in a private all girls school in Long Beach for five years. I have also taught in the Santa Ana Unified School District for five years. This is my third year teaching at AVCS.

I have been married to my husband, Harry, for fourteen years. We have been together for twenty years. We met in college. We have two beautiful boys. This year, Harrison will be eleven years old and Hayden will be nine years old. I am so excited that both of my boys will be in classrooms right across the way from me.

I love to travel and experience new adventures.  I enjoy online scrapbooking, going to the movies and spending time with friends and family. I enjoy my children. I love to watch them play and listen to them speak. They ask the most interesting questions.

Last year was so amazing! God made fifth grade so special. He filled it with wonderful memories, many educational experiences and unforgettable teachable moments and conversations. I once again welcome God’s blessings for another wonderful
year. I am already very familiar with my new teaching partner, Miss Lostrom. I had the privilege of working with her last year as well. I look forward to working as a team to promote a strong, spiritual, and academic-enriched fifth grade experience.

My goals for my fifth graders are to help them to continue to practice taking responsibility for themselves, their actions and their materials (assignments, homework, etc.) and to stay organized. Our monthly organizers will help us tremendously.

We are going to be thoroughly prepared for sixth grade!
