PRESS RELEASE
ALISO VIEJO CHRISTIAN SCHOOL HOLDS A GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY FOR PHASE I
OF CONSTRUCTION FOR NEW SPORTS/EVENT CENTER
Aliso Viejo, California June 18, 2009 – Aliso Viejo Christian School celebrates the culmination of the first year of a 3-year capital campaign by breaking ground on a new Sports/Event center project for the K- 8th grade school.
Aliso Viejo Christian School has marked its 10-year anniversary with the beginning of a new Sports/Event Center planned for the Elementary and Middle School campus. Principal Kathy Hutchins and Assistant Principal Leann Karr were on hand to turn the first ceremonial shovel of dirt at a groundbreaking ceremony for the future location of the planned Gym/Event center. Past, present and future generations of AVCS students were represented by graduates Madison Cornwell and Tyler Needham from the class of 2008. Representing the present, 2008-2009 Student Council President Arianna Bennett, and incoming Student Council President, Rachael Winters. Representing the future, Ethan Lee a current 4th grade student and Kindergarten student Dylan Laguatan completed the distinguished group. The groundbreaking event celebrates the efforts of parents and church members partnering to raise funds to add a gym to the campus.
The construction project includes the addition of a 14,000 sq. ft, two-story building which will house a gymnasium, locker rooms, coaching offices and specialty classrooms. At the completion of the Event Center, the current sanctuary will be renovated to be an updated, dedicated chapel. Plans include a solar panel system to help reduce utility costs and to be used to educate students in Green technologies. Construction will start this summer to begin all the prerequisite site preparation in anticipation of building the main structure in the summer of 2010. Kirk Nelson, President of Design Intervention, coordinator of the project says “the economy has provided an opportune time to build with lower costs. The school has the ability to have their dollars go much further in these tight economic times.”
Aliso Viejo Christian School serves as a ministry of Lutheran Church of the Cross. In the Fall of 2008, the church launched a 3-year Capital Campaign to raise funds for the project. The goal is to raise $3.5 million dollars to complete all projects on campus. Leann Karr, Assistant Principal for Aliso Viejo Christian School reported that the school and church community together have pledged close to $1 million dollars to begin preliminary construction for the new gym, and the capital campaign is currently underway to raise the remainder of the funds needed to hopefully make the project a reality by 2010. “We are excited about the prospect of having dedicated space for our athletics programs and specialty classes. We believe that we will significantly enhance our ability to serve all our students with this new endeavor.”
John Foss, pastor for Aliso Viejo Christian School and Lutheran Church of the Cross says, “In 1998 the John and Donna Crean Foundation donated $2.3 million dollars to Lutheran Church of the Cross to purchase the property that the school is located on. Through the generosity of the Crean family, over 3000 children have already benefited from having a school that is grounded in academic excellence, has a Bible based environment and also believes in nurturing the student to become a life-long learner”.
